Most of us are taught that poor behavior is simply the horse acting out. We're told to "get after" the horse, "move his feet" or tell him to "quit it" to make him behave. What we are not told is that behavior problems
are balance problems.
Whether mental, emotional or physical, an imbalance may be the underlying cause of the behavior. And horses only have so many ways of expressing themselves - through what we typically term poor behavior.
Bad behavior is the only way the horse can express the feeling of dis-ease, the lack of ease. When at ease, horses are calm, willing and engaged. They are mentally, emotionally and physically balanced. And, it seems horses like the company of people as long as they feel safe.
